Setting up your own business can be both rewarding and challenging, the statistics for people setting up their own business show a stark increase and this is mainly due to the changes in the way we all shop and choose products. There has never been more choice and individuality especially when online shopping and this has given rise to smaller niche businesses succeeding where they once did not.
Working with families can be both rewarding and challenging for many reasons but these reasons are not always obvious when we first start out. We tend to have a nostalgic idea of working with family members and its not until we make that leap of faith that we experience those challenges.
There are lots of family businesses and partner businesses that work very well but they have all been through their own journeys and come out the other side. In order to learn and work through the challenges of working with family, you first have to experience them and that can be hard and unpleasant at times. If you do manage to come through those tough times, you can go on to have a very successful business and see and experience the positives of working with family and friends.
There are many challenges and those are quite obvious when you first set up a business working with family members. We are all individual people with our own ideas and in a non family environment, we would discuss those ideas but ultimately if you are the boss, you get the last say. When families work together, they have to learn to compromise and often one of you will have to back down, negotiating which one that will be in the early stages of the business can be very challenging. The plus side is that you learn to understand that you can’t always have things your own way and there will be times ultimately that you do have to back down and let the other person decide.
Many partners or married couples that work together often find there is no cut off point when you leave work and issues and decisions in the work place often follow you home. This can be fatal because there becomes no start and no finish to your work life balance. Many cope successfully with this by having a strict policy not to speak about work when they are at home but for many that simply doesn’t work. If an argument has ensued and it hasn’t been solved, however hard you try, it will spill across into home life especially if one of you feels incredibly resentful.
Its really important to realize when you work with family that we all have strengths and weaknesses and having your own areas within a business is one sure fire way to success, having the respect not to comment or judge the decisions your partner makes in their domain is vital to success. This ensures you are both part of the business and some decisions can be made together but that you both have your own areas where you are free to make those decisions without the opinion of others.
There are many pro’s and con’ to working with family members and on the plus side, you know you have someone you can trust and you are all working in the same direction. Communication can often be lost if arguments are frequent and when you enter that non-communicative zone, you are heading fro trouble. Its vital you are both heard and say and feel listened to, even if you ultimately don’t end up making the decision at the time, knowing that your views are important is vital.
It has to be an individual choice when deciding to work with family but there is so much you cannot experience until you have walked down that path. If you have an open mind to take and accept those challenges, there is always a way through and you could have a very successful working relationship with family members.
