The one thing that has changed and continues to change in most markets is personalization and choice. We can shop anywhere without leaving the house and we no longer stay as faithful as we did to certain supermarkets or stores. We are however shopping more locally and that is why Local Craft Beers, wines and foods are doing so well. People are showing real signs that they want to know where their food and drink comes from and Local Food Markets and Craft Fairs that supply locally sourced foods are doing very well once more.
If you Work From Home, love baking and really want to get your cakes into local markets, shops and supermarkets, it won’t happen over night but if you are persistent and understand it will be hard work along the way, there is every reason to believe you will see your creations on the shelves. Many supermarkets are stocking locally sourced foods, drinks and cakes. those that stick to a niche market by providing Speciality Foods such as Vegan, vegetarian and children’s produce. For those that have already succeeded in this market have done so through necessity, they may have tried to source Gluten Free Foods or Cakes without success or their children have special dietary requirements. If you don’t find what you are looking for, the natural thing is to create it which we all do without giving much thought to it and if you need it and find a place for it, the likelihood is so will many more people which then becomes your potential Customer.
If you produce your goods Working From Home, start small and map out the Local Food Markets and Craft Fairs, at this stage don’t worry too much about not making any money because the first step is to get your produce out there and known. Make a list of local shops that stock and sell local and natural products and go and visit them, the worst they can say is no and whilst some will, there will almost certainly be others that will agree to stock and sell a small quantity of your produce.
There are the legal side of things like making sure you are registered with the local authority for producing food and if you Work From Home, they will want to come and visit you to examine the work place to ensure you are following all of the rules. This may feel scary but it’s a necessity you will not avoid, if you are serious about making your business a success you need to ensure you do the right things from the beginning.
The packaging you have for your cakes or produce is also really important, this will represent you and your product. Always have the type of customers you are selling to in mind and the market you want to target. Think carefully about this because once you have decided on your packaging, its not something you can just change although it can be improved upon.
There is no reason why you can’t go all the way and eventually sell to bigger stores like Tesco or Sainsbury’s but you must take one step at a time and work your way up. The bigger supermarkets look for reliability, your ability to produce the quantities they need on time and consistency and they usually only work with established businesses and this is exactly what you can be if you take one step at a time, have determination even when its tough and don’t give up. Established businesses were all small Work From Home Businesses at one time.
